September 2006: Brighton Beach lifeguards and the remains of the West Pier. The optimism of the group who want to rebuild the West Pier should be a shining example to us all. When one of the last chunks caught fire and sunk even further into the sea, they declared that the mishap 'had saved them on demolition costs'. The pier, which was originally burnt down during the filming of 'Tommy' (you can see a few seconds of the actual building going up in flames during the movie) was actually the finer of the two, although it would be cheaper to build a new one than try and do anything with this.
